Story: The Lion and the Mouse
Materials
1 set of eight animal picture cards  (A-4 size)
5 sets of animal picture cards (Small)

Who wins the game? How?
Pupils look for their friends who make the same animal sound and form a group. The group that comes together first, wins the game.   
PROCEDURE
TEACHER TALK & MODEL
Animals:
1.    Trainer shows the eight picture cards of the animals (A4-size) to the class, one at a time and asks: “What’s this?” (Trainer points to the picture as he/she asks the question)
2.   Class: Elephant
3.   Trainer: Good job!
4.   Trainer: Ali, what’s this?
5.   Ali: Elephant
6.   Trainer: Good job.
7.   Trainer shows the class another picture card and asks: “What’s this?”
8.   Class: Snake
9.   Trainer: Good job!
10. Trainer: Najib, what’s this?
11. Najib: Snake
12. Trainer: Good job.
(Trainer repeats this procedure until all the eight picture cards have been shown to the class)

Animal sounds:
1.  Trainer shows to the class six A4-sized picture cards of the LION,   
     SNAKE, MONKEY, MOUSE, ELEPHANT and BIRD, one at a time, and  
     asks: “What’s this?” (Trainer shows the picture of a LION)
2.  Trainer praises CPs for the correct answers given.(“Good job!”)
3.  Trainer asks “What sound does it make?” (Trainer gestures or shows   
     his/her facial expression and prompts the class to produce the appropriate   
     sound)
     The class roars. (Trainer roars with the class and says “Good job!”)
4.  Trainer shows the class another picture card (SNAKE) and asks them,
     “What’s this?” (Class responds and trainer says: Good job)
5:  Trainer: “What sound does it make?” (Trainer gestures or shows his/her   
     facial expression and prompts the class to produce the appropriate    
     sound)
     The class hisses. (Trainer hisses with the class and says “Good job!”)
6.  Trainer repeats this procedure until all the six picture cards have been  
     shown to the class together with the sounds these animals make.
7.  Next, trainer tells CPs that they are going to play a game. Each CP will be  
     given a picture card (small ones) and they have to make the sound  
     of the animals that have been given to them. (As they do so, they look for    
     their friends who make the same sound and form a group.  
5. The group that comes together first, wins the game.

Rationale
What does this task do?  Activity 1: Animals
This task activates children’s schema on animals in the forest besides providing them with opportunities to practise pronouncing the names of the animals correctly.

Learning Type:  Learning through Mistakes & Creative Drill

Questions? Problems?
Some children may not be able to pronounce the names of the animals correctly. Teacher   needs to model the pronunciation of these animal names with the children repeating after him/her. The lexical items are shown through the use of animal picture cards.
